Parker Lady 45

The Parker Lady 45 will not fix the bill for most lady pen in this era. The length of the Parker Lady 45 is just too long

When Parker launched the Model Lday 45 (Parker Lady 45) back in the 1960, it marketing pitch for Parker 45 refilling was as easy as loading the the ubiquitous Colt .45 Peacemaker gun.
What happen to the paper clip?

While standard pens in the '60 comes with clip, this Parker Lady 45 does not. This is not a manufactory issue, but it was design without a clip.
In the Sixty, hand bag is an essential item for the Lady, they do not leave home with it for good reason. The lady wear dress that don't have pocket, and a pen clip will be in their way when putting the pen in their bag.

The design of the Parker Lady 45 are simple, and elegance, just like the yellow dress wore by beauty above. Simple cutting which show off the coke bottle shape of the lady figure.
The engraving design on the silver cap and barrel is just as simple as the pen itself. A twisted lined pattern it go round the pen.
The simple twisted line cut from the pen cap through the barrel and they are align as your can see from the picture above. The word "Parker" is engraved proudly on the pen.
The pen cap top and barrel bottom has the same color as the pen section. The pen barrel bottom black is larger than the pen cap. A simple way to help identify cap and the pen iteself.

We are lucky to add this beauty in our collection with it original box many thanks to our good friend CS.

Namiki Emporer Kylin 麒麟

The Qilin or Kylin (麒麟) is a mythical East Asia creature and one of the important mythological animals. It is believe that the Qilin bring prosperity, serenity, and male offspring

It is also believe that is will appear with the imminent or passing of a wise sage or an illustrious ruler.

Kirin is sometimes listed as one of the four noble animals, along with the Chinese dragon, phoenix and tortoise - instead of the tiger. Like all great rulers, the Chinese believe Qilin is always lonely

It is believe Kylin As a rule this animal is depicted having a few horns, green and blue scaly skin, hooves of a deer, the head of a dragon and a bear's tail.

The appearance and desciption of Qilin/Kirin (麒麟) has change over time.

It is believed that the original appearance Kirin have the head of a fragon, a body of a tiger, with green and blue scaly skin and a bear's tail due to culture different in the China dynasties, and different culture in Japan and Korea.
One of the believe the Qilin appearance is giraffe like, and giraffe is the modem version of the Qilin which might have the magical power of the kirin.

This may becuase the giraffe has horn-like "ossicones" on its head.

Do you know that the giraffe is called kirin (기린) by the Koreans and kirin (キリン) by the Japanese?

Namiki Emporer is the third Kirin maki-e pens we come acorss. The first two was launched by Dani-Trio and Sailor.
Dani Trio launched the Kirin pen titled Dento Kogei-shi limited edition, and it is painted by Masanori Omote. This year Omote-san should be 72 years-old.

Sailor launched the Kirin under the Shi Rei Limited Edition. Sailor maki-e artisan  Ohsita-san painted the Kylin on Sailor King Of Pen (KOP). This is limited to 28 pieces worldwide.
Namiki artisan Masaru-san painted this mystical creature Kylin on the Namiki Emporer fountain pen. Both Taka makie and Shishiai Togidashi maki-e technique are use to paint this beautiful and colorful Namiki Emporer Kylin.
The Kylin head details is fantastic. The most complex maki-e techniqu shishiai togidashi maki-e technique is used to paint the Kirin head in oriental style.
The body of the Kylin is painted using taka maki-e technique.  The green and blue scaly skin on it body are well represented.

The fire on the body are painted in oriental style. The fire movement flow in the same direction as the Kirin.
We notice Namiki maki-e design is changing it style. The layout are now toward the west. The pen cap and barrel will have it own theme. Unlike it the past, the entire pen is design with one theme or layout that make the pen look like one beautiful picture or drawing of art.
We notice the new Namiki pens in 2012, including the new Namiki Yubasame Limtied Editon 2012 and this beautiful Namiki Emporer Kylin, has a different design approach. The pen cap are painted with flowers, and the pen barrel is design with main theme.

This beautiful Namiki Emporer Kylin is available at all major Namiki authorized dealer.

Trigger Fountain Pen

We managed to purchase this pen many thanks to our good friend Kite who oraganized a MO for Shawn Newton made pen. This is our first Shawn made to order (MTO) pen. We don't know what to expect from Shawn as this is our first pen.

The finished pen turn out to satisfactorily.

The 18K two tone gold nib was grind to a sharp italic by Shawn.

We like this pen very much as it remember as of the Disney character Trigger, and bring back those good childhood memory.

Some of friends don't like it, but don't say "why". Guess it is just not appealing to some "serious" adult.

As we are used to heavier pens, we felt this too better for us. This is due to the polyester resin material, and not Shawn skill of tuning the pen. Of couse, if the section can be made using other material, it will add a little weight to it.

Here is a sample writing using the "Tigger" fountain pen.

Merry Christmas!

Pelikan Ginko & Maple Leaves Limited Edition

Every year, Pelikan will released two maki-e limited edition. The Pelikan Maki-e “Ginko & Maple Leaves” Limited Edition is the second maki-e limited edition. Pelikan maki-e artisan Yamazaki-san continue to show case the beauty of Japan with the Pelikan Maki-e "Ginko & Maple Leaves" Limited Edition fountain pen.

In autumn, both the ginko and maple leaves changes their colors. The ginko leaves turn a bright yellow, then fall, sometimes within a short space of time from one to 15 days. The maple will turn orangish red.

While the design is all about leaves, maki-e artisan Yamazaki-san using his skillful hand bring the autumn motifs of Japan alive. The glittering leaves look as if they have just twirled from the tree in the first autumn wind, with golden splashes of color that show this magnificent season and its warm sunlight at its best.
The maple leaves are painted using the Taka maki-e technique. A maki-e technique which raise the design above the surface giving it the third dimension.
The leave stem are given painted with gold paint making it come alive and giving it another dimension. When your thumb glides over the maple leave (picture below), you will feel the difference. The maple leave and the stem so real, like a piece of the actual leave glue to the fountain pen.
The fan shape leave are the ginko leaves. The are not as interesting as the maple leaves. It uses a different maki-e techinque from the maple leaves.
Yamazaki-san uses both Taka maki-e technique and Kiri-gane (gold leaf art) to paint a few of the ginko leaves.
On the pen barrel, both the Ginko and Maple leave are painted using taka maki-e technique but with a different design and layout.

One particular maple leaf catches our attention (above below).  It uses Kiri-gane with Taka maki-e technique to give 3D and form pattern. A technique which the artisan slice the gold leaf into tiny desired shape like a square or thin stripe as narrow as a 1/1000mm.
The artisan uses bamboo leaf to splice the gold leaf into the desire shape or stripe. The bamboo knife is the best tool as as metal or other material knife will caused static and hence damage the gold leaf.

The art of using gold leaft to decorate ornament was not born in Japan but back to 3 BC from ancient Egypt. The use of gold leaf later make it to Japan during the 700 AD together with Buddhism. It florish as the Buddhism became wide spread in 1300, but slowly die off in the early 1800 during the modernization of Japan.
The pen is crowned with a maki-e Pelikan logo. Like all Pelikan Maki-e Limited Edition, it comes only with the standard Pelikan M1000 Souverän finely-chased 18 carat gold nib accentuated with a rhodium décor, in the nib size M. Each pen is individually signed by the artist.

It is currently available locally in Singapore.

The following is a youtube clip from Pelikan about the art of creating a Maki-e fountain pen using this beautiful Pelikan Ginko and Maple Leaves Limited Edition as The Pen.

Happy New Year!!! Let start the year with a red color pen for good luck, good fortune and joy.

Last year (2012), S.T. Dupont Annual Néo Classique  Limited Edition pay tribute to the Second French Empire (1852 - 1870).

This limited edition was crafted based on great furniture houses of the Second French Empire, also known as  Napolean III style. It is a term also used elsewhere in the world for this style.  The Second Empire Style not only impacted French, it also major impact on design throughout Europe and the United States.

One of the distinct feature of this style is the design mainstream is the decorative arts of Europe with influence from Spain to Sweden and Russia.
The first thing that caught our eye was the sophisticated ornamentation with golden floral motifs.
The entire presentation of Néo Classique Second Empire Limited Edition is very grand, from the black lacqure collector box to the way the pen stand holding the pen.

The skillful hand of the master craftman at S.T. Dupont did a excellent job for the Second Empire Limited Edition. There is a weath of details executed with technical perfection that can only come from skillful craftman.
Did you spot the similarity between the pen clip and the pen stand legs?

The scuplted bronze clip is finely engraved with delicate floral marquetry patterns, a characteristic of the Second Empire.

The clip also carries 8 hand set rubies to give you the' 'blink blink', and a pen suitable for the royalties.
S.T.Dupont's double "D" which is Lucien and Andre Tissot Dupont created the brand on in 1872. The S.T. Dupont's double "D" is not only engraved on the pen, but almost on all possible presentation part of the accessories too.

On the pen stand, the S.T Dupont's double "D" medallions is "glue" on the front of the pen stand.
At the back of the pen stand, it is painted with the founding year 1872.
The pen top is adorned with S.T Dupont's double "D" medallions . Engraved medallions are featured on the fountain pen’s barrel bottom as well as the opulent 18k gold nib.
The S.T.Dupont Second Empire Limited Edition come with a special bottle of ink.
The ink bottle cap has the S.T Dupont's double "D" medallions too. With the S.T Dupont's double "D" medallions  in so many places of the S.T. Dupont Second Empire Limited Edition, how can you not know that this is a S.T. Dupont Limited Edition fountina pen set.
Unlike the previous Limited Néo-Classique Président Limited Edition set, the S.T. Dupont Second Empire Prestige President Limited Edition set does not come with a letter open. :-(
It comes with a rollerball section for you to interchange with the fountain pen, but it does not come with any refill but you to use the S.T. Dupont Second Empire Limited Edition pen as a rollerball ... or maybe S.T. Dupont feel that this is a pen for display and not for use as it is too huge a pen for any good writer hand.

The S.T. Dupont Second Empire Limited Edition is currently available.

The S.T. Dupont Second (French) Empire Limited Edition is a very interesting pens that highlighted the great architecture during that period. Here is another not so expensive limited edition pen by Stipula as compare to S.T Dupont that pay tribute to the Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi (25 June 1852 - 10 June 1926), who build/model a few landmarks in his life time, and one of them is Casa Batllo.

Located in the one of the major avenues and important area of business and shopping in Barcelona Spain lie a very colorful architecture inspired by the sea elements. It is the Casa Batlló restored by Antoni Gaudí in 1877. It was later remodeled in the years 1904–1906. The local call it Casa dels ossos (House of Bones) as it has visceral, skeletal organic quality.

Like the actual Casa Batllo, the Stipula Casa Batllo Limited Ediion pen has every identifiable features of a Gaudi design; tracery, irregular oval windows and flowing sculpted stone work.
The attractvive and colourful pen clip is took the shape from one of chimmey tower of the building. The color and styling of the clip too.
Like the clip, the pen cap trimming too is model after part of the building.

Are you able to give a guess where does Stipula get the inspiration for the pen trimming?

Hint: Have a closer look at the windows?
Did you manage to guess the correct answer?
The pen cap trimming is model after the metal work of the balcony.

This beautiful Stipula Casa Batllo Limited Edition is limited to 274 individually numbered pieces worldwide and comes in two type of nibs. The titaniums and 18K gold nib. The price of the two a not close to each others.

Namiki Zodiac Dragon

We are three weeks away before the Year of Dragon come to an end. I thought it will be a good idea to look a "forgotten" Namiki Zodiac Dragon.

In the pictures, I have taken pictures of the two Namiki Zodiac Dragon fountain pens. If you notice, the new Namiki Zodiac fountain pens are the first sign of Namiki changes their design.

The maki-e design on the pen barrel will be the main theme, and the cap would be a "matching" flowers.

I think Namiki changes their approach for three reasons. Firstly, I think this is to make the design less complex. Secondly, it is to increase the productivity of the maki-e artisan.
And lastly, reduce the number of pen repairs. There are many repair due to users who turned "one turn to many" when putting their pen cap, causing the cap and barrel design not to align.

Both Namiki Zodaic Dragon look entirely different. The old Namiki Zodiac dragon has sharpe teeth, holding on to a fiery pearl.  The new Namiki Zodiac Dragon Series Two was painted have a friendly expression. It reminded be of Mushu the dragon in the Disney cartoon Mulan.
The old Namiki Zodiac Dragon pen cap has design of thunder and cloud, which is very much related to the dragon, as it fly in the sky and there is thunder and strom when it comes.
The old nib for both series of Namiki Zodaic are the same. There is no changes to the characteristic of the nib. The same apply to the pen clip.
The price of the new Namaki Zodiac is must dearer. The old Namiki was resin materials, and the new Namiki Zodiac has a bass base, which make it much heavier.

Some of the old Namiki Zodiac fountain pens are still available at authorized retailers, and the new Zodiac Dragon will continue to be available till the next Year of Rat before Namiki launched a new series, or Namiki decided to cut production which it is unlkely as it is a still in demand.

Pilot Vanishing Point Gun Metal Gray/Matt Black

Pilot launched another Gun Metal Grey color for their iconic vanishing point (capless) pen last Christmas. The grey are darker as compare to the previous Gun Metal color. Instread of the standard Rhodium triming, this latest vanishing point pen treated the metalic parts with matt back finishing, similar to the Pilot Vanishing Point stealth pen.

While the triming is matt finishing, the barrel are not. It is gloss. hmmmmm ... disappointed.

We think a matt finsihing barrel will make this Vanishing Point look at a gun ... "a pen is mighty than gun". It kill silently. LOL
Initially, we didn't like the color matching and two different finishing, but slowing we accepted this pen into our Vanishing Point collection. We feel the tone of the grey is nice, and there are not many grey moderm pens nowadays.
The Pilot Japan is engraved at the usual position. Did you notice the trimming?
It is in glossy black finishing. This is to match the barrel glossy finishing.

Did you notice another different of the Pilot Vanishing Point Gun Metal Grey with matt black finishing as compare to the Pilot Stealth Vanishing Point?
While some of our oversea fountain pen users get their before last Christmas, it is only available recently locally in Singapore.

In a few more hours, we are going to say bye bye to the Year of the Dragon, and welcome the Year of the snake.

Today is a good opportunity to feature one last dragon pen, before we welcome a new lunar year.

While doing our spring cleaning, we found a China made Wing Sun (永生) model 52 pen. This is a budget pen which we purchased during a visit in China a few years back.

It is a very simple pen. The pen is made of resin with steel triming and cap. On the cap trimming, the brand name Wing Sun and model no is engraved. There is no fancy decoration. The steel cap is decorated with a Chinese Dragon. A very standard Chinese dragon which you can find in a lot of the Chinese book.
There is only one dragon on the pen cap. The head is on the right of the clip with the tail ending on the left.
The pen comes in two type of steel nib,  the standard fountain pen nib, and the fude nib. The Chinese fountain pen nib only comes in one standard size.

Happy Lunar New Year!!!

... when I saw the new Omas Arte Italiana Noir Collection, I changed my mind, immediately ordered 3 pieces of the writing instruments.

The cap and barrel are embellished with a fine guilloche engraving characterized by a rice grain pattern, which emphasizes the classical nature, highlights the true black beauty and modernity of the black Ruthenium trim.

Last November, we shared the news that Caran d'Arche launched a Buddha Edition 2013.Last month, the actual writing instrument landed. We took a few pictures to share it with you, and you will noticed the actual Caran d'Ache Buddha 2013 Limited Edition is much nicer than the poster.

We were told last year that the Caran d'Ache Buddha 2013 Edition fountain pen was limited to 88 pieces worldwide with each individually numbered, but . . .

When we recevied the actual Caran d'Ache Buddha 2013 Limited Edtion, it was engraved as limited to 108 pieces worldwide. This is an additional of 20 more pieces.

The actual limited number of pieces is 108, not 88. It is confirmed by the local AD.
The top of the sterling silver clip is decorated with a Buddha head.
Unlike the previous Caran d'Ache Buddha Limited Edition, the entire Buddha 2013 limited edition is decorated with different design of the Buddha head.
The picture above show the most common Buddha head design is found in Asia.
This Buddha face has a sharper chin, and longer ear. It look like younger Buddha as compare to previous picture.
This Buddha head look similar to the previous, but it actually design. Are you able to spot the different?
Beside decorating the the entire pen with Buddha head, there is also the lotus flowers.

Sailor Endangered Mammals The African Elephant Limited Edition

The African Elephant Limited Edition is the second of the Sailor Endangered Mammals series. The first limited edition pen is the Giant Panda Limited Edition which was launched last May 2012.

While we feel it s a endangered mammals is good theme, the artwork in the Sailor Endangered Mammals have not bring out the best of master artisan Nishihara-san. In my opinion, the Salior Endangered Mammals Limited Edition show each master artisan has their favor artwork, and elephant look does not look like master artisan Nishihara favor.
The African Elephant painted on the Sailor Endangered Mammals reminded me of my eldest son school science project. We created a snake-and-ladder game based on the Safari theme. The African elephant was one of the mammals that was painted . . .
. . . it does not have any details. . . only the basic line to give the impression that it is an elephant.
I think maki-e master should paint the elephant skin with a different tone of grey to give it a more realistic look, and finer line to show the skin texture to call this a limited edition pen.
I don't like the way the elephant trunk was painted. The adult elephant is not well painted.

On the pen cap, master maki-e artisan Nishihara painted two, not one, baby elephant.
One in grey color, similar to the adult elephant, and the younger elephant in golden brown. Both the adult and baby grey elephant eyes are painted using raden maki-e technique.
The artisan Nishihara also painted a few trees in different colors as the background on the cap. Again, it is a disappointing representation of tress.

I wonder how would the African elephant look like in the hand of  Kokokai master artisan .

The Sailor Endangered Mammals is limited to 88 individually numbered pieces worldwide. It is available since last year (2012).

The Sailor Bengal Tiger is the last piece of the Sailor Endangered Mammals Limited Editon or the 2012 Limited Edition of the 88 inidividually numbered limited edition.

It is finished by the same maki-e artisan of the previous two endangered manmals limited edition pen, the gaint panda and African elephant.

Master maki-e artisan Nishihara again painted three tigers on this Sailor Endangered Mammals Limited Edition fountain pen.

There are two cub on the pen cap. and one tiger on the pen barrel.

Like the Sailor African Elephant Limited Edition, the details of the tiger and cub are not there. It doesn't bring our the best of the artisan work, and lack the basic tiger characteristic.

From the picture, the tiger look like it got an eye injury while trying to escape from the hunter.

SAVE THE TIGER!Stop hunting for their skin.

This are just my initial feel when I first look at the picture. The actual may look much better, and will need time to better appreciate Sailor Endangered Mammals Bengal Tiger Limited Edition.

The Sailor Endangered Mammals Bengal Tiger Limited Edition is limited to 88 pieces worldwide, and will be available in March 2013.

Recently, Namiki launched Minamo raden and Stripe raden maki-e Vanishing point. The pictures shown is the Minamo raden maki-e vanishing point. This is not a limited edition.

With this new raden maki-e vanishing point, it make the first raden maki-e a good collector value from price point perspective.

I think the Minamo raden is the nicer of the two.
Unlike the other vanishing point fountain pens, the Namiki Made In Japan is missing from these raden maki-e fountain pen.

Does that mean it is no longer made in Japan?
... maybe because the usual area now is decorated with raden, it is not possible to display the brand name and country of origin.
